Migrants crossing the English Channel to the UK have been reported for the first time in 2024.
Arrivals had not been recorded since 16 December, according to Home Office figures, with poor weather conditions potentially contributing to the lack of activity at sea.It means there had been 27 days of no crossings until today.
This is the longest gap in small boat arrivals for just over five years.

A court has been told Scottish sub-postmasters who were given a criminal record as a result of the Post Office scandal have been placed in an "intolerable" position by politicians promising to pardon victims.

A pilot scheme to allow journalists and legal bloggers to report cases from three family courts in England and Wales is to be extended to almost half of the courts in the countries.
From 29 January, coverage of cases at 16 more family court centres in England will be permitted.
This means 19 of the 43 centres in England and Wales will be part of the Transparency Pilot.
Families and individual social workers will be anonymous under the scheme.
However, reporting can include the names of local authorities and some experts, once Transparency Orders are granted.

The UK will provide £2.5bn of military aid to Ukraine over the coming year, Rishi Sunak has said - Britain's largest annual commitment since Russia's invasion.

An electric double-decker bus caught fire during the morning rush hour in south-west London.
Emergency services were called to Wimbledon Hill Road/Alwyne Road in Wimbledon shortly after 07:20 GMT.
Transport for London (TfL) said the bus was quickly evacuated, and the Met Police said no injuries were reported. The force declared a critical incident.
Tom Cunnington, TfL's head of bus business development, said: "Safety is our top priority and we are working with the operator, London General, and the bus manufacturer, Switch, to investigate what happened."

The birds only come to the UK when food is lacking in their native forests in Russia and northern Europe.

Chief Whip Simon Hart issued writs for the vacant seat of Wellingborough to replace Peter Bone, suspended from the Commons in a ****** ual misconduct scandal.
Chris Skidmore, who resigned over the government's energy plans, will also be replaced as MP for Kingswood.
North Northamptonshire Council has confirmed that the Wellingborough by-election will be held on 15 February.

November's exam results show 22.9% of maths entries were marked at a grade 4, a standard pass, or above, down from 24.9% in 2022 and 26.9% in 2019.
However, the pass rate for GCSE English resits rose to 40.3% - up from 38% and 32.3% respectively.
The fall in the maths pass rate comes after the government announced plans to replace A-levels and T-levels with a new Advanced British Standard, which would include some English and maths to 18.
